Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport

The Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is in the suburb of Kenner about ten miles west of downtown, and has three runways. The airport is only four feet above sea level in an area covering 1500 acres. The airport was originally called Moisant Field when it opened in 1946 to replace the old New Orleans Lakefront Airport, and in 2001 the name was changed to Louis Armstrong. During the last four decades several proposals have been studied for a new airport site, but none have been approved.

Interstate highway I-10 runs by New Orleans International Airport, making for an easy and quick drive downtown. Taxis, car rental, shared ride vans, and public transportation is available beside baggage claim and ticketing areas.

The amount of traffic and further development at New Orleans International Airport were severely affected by the hurricane Katrina disaster, and today the amount of traffic at the airport is still below amounts before Katrina. New Orleans had several international carriers offering routes to Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America over several decades, but presently it has little international service beyond Air Canada to Toronto.

Presently Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport has two terminals, which are divided by a central ticketing area. The two terminals are further divided into four concourses, which are A, B, C, and D. Concourse A has six gates and is closed, with plans to have it modified into offices for the aviation department. Concourse B has thirteen gates and may be converted to service only charter flights. Both concourses A and B were built in 1975.

All charter, overflow, and international flights arrive at Concourse C, which was built in 1991 with fifteen gates. Opened in 1997, Concourse D houses the Delta Airlines Sky Club Lounge, which is the only airline lounge at the airport, and has seven gates with another six being built. Southwest Airlines presently provides the most service at New Orleans International Airport, while Delta still has a strong presence.
