Fair Grounds Race Course
In addition to live horse racing, Fair Grounds offers simulcast wagering on-track and at nine facilities throughout southeast Louisiana. With each OTB location except Covington also offering video poker, Fair Grounds has the largest number of video poker machines in the area.
Fair Grounds Race Course Info
The Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans, LA, opened in 1852 as the Union Course. It was later known as the Creole Race Course. The name was changed to the Mechanics and Agricultural Fair Grounds in 1863. A facility with slot machines opened at the course in 2007. The course is now known as Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.
The Fair Grounds Race Course is 20 minutes away from the New Orleans International Airport and 10 minutes away from the city’s Central Business District. It can be reached by car or city bus.
Annual horse races at the Fair Grounds include the Louisiana Derby in March and the Fair Grounds Oaks in April. The annual Mardi Gras Handicap at the course is one of numerous events held in New Orleans to celebrate Mardi Gras. Visitors can watch the races from the clubhouse or the grandstand.
There are over 600 slot machines at the Fair Grounds. These include dollar, quarter, nickel and penny machines.
The clubhouse dining room at the Fair Grounds is open on the days of live races. The Grandstand Buffet is open for lunch and dinner Thursdays through Sundays. Takeout food is available at the DeSaix Deli and the Gentilly Grill. There are concession stands open in the grandstand and clubhouse during live races.
A variety of cuisine is available at restaurants within two miles of the Fair Grounds. Nonna Mia offers pasta and pizza. Items on the menu at Ralph’s on the Park include tuna tartare, turtle soup, lamb and steak.
Visitors who want hotels near the race course and New Orleans attractions will have several choices. The W New Orleans is about three miles from the Fair Grounds and next to the French Quarter. The Queen Anne is about four miles from the Fair Grounds in the Garden District.
Attractions in the French Quarter include Jackson Square and specialty shops. Parts of the St. Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square were built in 1794.
Visitors can see a number of New Orleans mansions by taking a walk through the Garden District.
