Aquarium of Americas

Looming large against the Mississippi River is the extraordinary Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, one of the top museums of its kind in America. Here the visitor finds 15,000 sea life creatures, representing nearly 600 species, living happily in a state-of-the-art facility.

All About the Aquarium

The Aquarium of the Americas has been delighting curious visitors since the first half of the twentieth century. With plenty of exhibits that are both informative and entertaining, this is one New Orleans attraction that boasts something for every member of the family.

The aquarium is one of the city’s premier destinations and as such visits to the facility can often be quite crowded. The least crowded days occur in the middle of the week, so this is a good time to schedule a visit if your itinerary is flexible. Exhibits are fully accessible for all visitors and an on-site restaurant and gift shop ensure that everyone can get a tasty meal or bring home a memorable souvenir.

Interactive exhibits are always among the favorites at any aquarium and this facility is no different. Parakeet Pointe is a highlight for bird lovers as visitors have an opportunity to mingle with hundreds of colorful birds and may even be able to feed them with seed sticks. The children in your party will be delighted with Adventure Island, an interactive play zone that gives them a chance to touch and feed cownose rays. The aquarium also allows you to explore exotic, distant locales with its Amazon Rain Forest exhibit. Embark on a loop of the tree tops and also marvel at the unique varieties of fish that are only found in the Amazon.

Also included at the aquarium are exhibits pertaining to the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico and a Mississippi River Gallery. You can even get up close and personal with penguins, sea otters, and tropical sharks. While at the aquarium you can learn about the staff’s efforts to rescue sea turtles and experience a hurricane simulator. With so much to see and do it can be difficult to take it all in with just one visit.

The aquarium is conveniently located on the edge of the French Quarter. Tickets are available in advance or at the door, with group rates being available anytime. Nearby parking makes this an easy destination to visit for locals and out of town visitors alike.
